Military:
Made Lieutenant 8th Pennsylvania Regiment August 9, 1776. Made Captain
July 25, 1777 under Generals Marion, Sumpter, Pickens, and Greene until
end of war.
Died: November 5, 1831 Guernsey
Buried: Old Cambridge. Known now as Founders Cemetery.
He took up 200 acres of land on Cooks Run 3 miles east of Cambridge. A
farmer and was sent North with the Pennsylvania troops. Is said to have
been taken prisoner at the battle of Three Rivers, Canada; was taken
out to execution, made masonic sign of distress, was sent back to guard
house by young english officer and that night freed. This is said to be
recorded in the masonic lodge in Cambridge.

Died: 1840 Jackson Township, Guernsey County at 124 yrs old.
Buried: Was first buried in a cemetery on the creek near Byesville. The
action of the water washed some of the bodies out. Friends and
relatives removed the body of Whitter to cemetery at Old Cambridge
Church graveyard about 1894.
He came to this country from Germany and settled at Baltimore when it
was only a village. Lived later in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Coming
from Pennsylvania to Guernsey County Ohio or that part of it which was
military reseration shortly after the war of 1812.
